PRODUCTION OF EFFERVESCENT TABLETS IN PHARMACEUTICALS - Part 3: “Wet granulation method for effervescent tablets - Multi-step granulation process using traditional mixing equipment”

12/09/2023

The wet granulation process in two separate steps is the most widely used technology and it is suitable for traditional drug mixing equipment such as Mixer & Granulator and Fluid-bed Dryer & Granulator.

According to this technology, the acid and alkali ingredients are granulated separately, then mixed together, before adding lubricant excipients to compress the tablets. Water, ethanol or alcohols can also be used as binding solvents as a standard wet granulation process.

In addition, it is also possible to granulate acid or base first, then add the remaining component in the final mixing step. A specific example, the acid ingredient is granulated first and then mixed with NaHCO3, preferably fine granules. Other additives, such as flavorings and lubricants, can be added and mixed later. This way helps to increase productivity and reduce costs because it eliminates a granulation step

MIXING LINE, GRANULATION COMPLYING TO THE TECHNOLOGY “MULTI-STEP WET GRANULATION” FOR EFFERVESCENT TABLETS MANUFACTURED BY TTP

(Mixing line in effervescent tablet production manufactured by TTP)

In the context of production and economy in Vietnam, multi-step wet granulation technology is the optimal choice because it is not much different from the technology of producing traditional tablet types, suitable for the level of labor force, easy to master technology and moderate investment cost.

The main equipment of the line includes:

  • High Speed Mixer & Granulator (HMG):
  • Fluid-bed Dryer & Granulator (FBDG)
  • Tilting & Lifting Device (TLT)
  • Connection system
  • IBC (Semi-finished product storage tank)

The above mixing line of TTP fully meets the production requirements for effervescent tablets and has successfully supplied to many customers both domestically and internationally.

The article above has provided an overview of all feasible technologies to produce effervescent tablets but how to choose the most suitable technology for a specific drug formula or product. The selection of technology - process - equipment must be closely related to the physical properties of raw materials such as particle size, density, flowability and moisture… Therefore, if you have a plan to invest in a factory or production line for effervescent products, please contact TTP at the address below.
